Anjel Hawkins
is a statuesque
and understatedly glamorous beauty with a voice that is equally as impressive and
captivating. Perhaps it is the mellifluous quality of her voice, which has often
been described as "smooth", "rich," and "awesome," or her tall five-foot-ten inch
frame that lead some to refer to her as the next Phyllis Hyman. In a short time,
this gifted vocalist has begun to create quite a stir on the jazz and blues circuits
in the Washington metropolitan area.
In the past year, Anjel
has been a featured jazz vocalist with several popular bands in the Washington
Metropolitan area such as: The Ron Smith Group,
Big Bang Method,
and The Keith Wilson Project among other groups. Hawkins also performed and as the lead vocalist
for Reflexions (a contemporary jazz and funk band) and
Nucleus & Friends.
Additionally, Hawkins toured, recorded and performed as the lead female vocalist with The
Hardway Connection Band & Show (an oldies-but-goodies band) and appears on their
current CD release entitled, "Party Till The Lights Go Out."
While writing music for
her own (soon to be released) CD project, Hawkins collaborated with producers from
Washington-based Capital Hill Records/Urban Soundtrack
(CHR) producers who specialize
in the production of Hip-Hop and Urban music. She appears on several CHR recording
project releases, including: "Hypnotic"
where she performed as a member of the female
vocal group, The Women of Capital Hill. The song was collaboration effort between
Hawkins, Adrienne Calhoun,
Neila Magwood,
and Capital Hill producers, Jermaine
"Big Jay" Christian, Sam "Johnny Walker-Black" Walker, and Frank "Mad Science"
Manja, and received airplay on several Washington area radio stations. Additional
collaborative efforts with Capital Hill Records include, "Daddy," an R&B; ballad
written and co-produced by Hawkins, and she appears as a vocalist on the CHR single,
"One Night Stand," with local Rap/Hip-Hop artists, 'One Duce', and Keith Brown (
"The Drinks On You").
In recent months,
Hawkins has opened for The Moments featuring and for
The Mark Greene Project.
Other recent appearances include venues such as: Trade Winds (Temple Hills, Maryland);
The Spotlight Lounge (Virginia); The Game Room; Club Elite, Martini's; CHF
Convention Center; The Tidewater Inn (in Salisbury, MD); Great Slates (in eastern Maryland);
The Double Tree at Tyson's Corner (in Virginia); The Ascot Restaurant and Lounge;
Lamont's; Prince Georges Community College at the BlueBird Jazz Festival.
